Firewall Centers: Mentoring, Education, & Leadership for At-Risk Youth in South Florida

Statistics say there are over 50,000 kids in South Florida who don’t stand a chance. Either because of family situations, learning difficulties, peer influence, or the lure of gangs and drugs. Firewall Centers exist to challenge the stats and prove that with the right environment and support, these kids can not only survive – but thrive.

Firewall Centers was founded as a 501(c) (3) organization in July 2003 with the mission of transforming students in high risk communities into outstanding students and servant leaders. The vision was developed after the tragic drug overdose of a thirteen year old girl in one of South Florida's most notorious trailer home communities. Andy and Janeth Fernandez began organizing weekly youth meetings in the very same trailer home park where the young girl lived and died, providing wholesome activities and positive lessons for its youth.

Andy and Janeth soon realized that most of the community's children were left unsupervised during after school hours, placing them at risk for engaging in juvenile crime and experimenting with drugs, alcohol, and unprotected sex. Recognizing the need for intervention, they decided that a daily positive presence was needed and an after-school mentoring and tutoring center was established.

Today, Firewall Centers is a dynamic and expanding organization providing middle and high school students in some of South Florida's most underprivileged areas with the opportunity to reach their greatest potential through daily mentoring, homework help and tutoring, and servant leadership development.

If you live in South Florida like I do and want to do more to impact youth in our community, visit the Firewall Centers website or facebook page and add the “Causes” application on facebook and put them as your cause of choice. And if you know of someone who might be interested in volunteering or donating to this life-changing program, feel free to pass this post on to them or share it with your social networks.

Here are a few success story videos I produced to help the organization in their fund-raising and recruiting efforts. These videos illustrate how Firewall Centers is providing kids who once didn't have a chance...with a chance. Please help spread the word...
