Photographer Showcase: Dina Goldstein's "Fallen Princesses"

Anybody who's ever watched a Disney movie knows that fairy tales have rather predictable happy endings; especially for the princesses. Well, photographer Dina Goldstein has replaced the "happily ever after" with a sobering dose of reality in her controversial "Fallen Princesses" series of photographs.

As a new mother, Goldstein was inspired by her observations of three year old girls and their fascination with the princesses in the Disney movies. Goldstein began to imagine Disney's perfect princesses juxtaposed with the real life challenges facing the women in her life such as illness, addiction, and self-image issues. With limited funds, Goldstein recreated classic fairy tale settings to expose (with wit, irony, and satire) the fallacious nature of female archetypes in the "real world".

Reality is always stronger (and more painful) than fiction. Enjoy...
