Geoff,

Here’s the problem with most bloggers, especially those who occupy the social media penthouses – they tend to perceive a contrarian view of their ideology as an attack. I always try to imagine how I would approach a disagreement with a blogger if they were standing right in front of me. What words would I say to their face? And then I write them.

As for being cordial, I don’t know you and don’t know if I would even like you. Heck, maybe we’d be best friends if we ever met. But that’s not the case, so I address only the content written. Business, as they say, never personal.

I might not agree with what you write but I don’t ever call you names or attack you personally. Even on the last comment that you banned from your post. That was bush league. Big time. If you’re gonna have the balls to blog, then be a man when someone disagrees with what you’ve written. Not sure how you define “cordial” but I wasn’t disrespectful, I merely took issue with what you had written and explained why.

Accept it or get off the train, yes?

When I embrace hate and divisiveness, I receive it. We live in a country where black, white, Jew, Hispanic, Asian, Muslim all seem to co-exist in peace, and slowly but surely move towards a country where a terrorist bombing can happen by religious fundamentalists and those who have the same religion but are more moderate are not held accountable.

Celebrate differences, but respect others views without attacking them and the world will open to you, Dan. It’s take seven months for me to come up with a response that would be respectful. But it was worth waiting rather than simply trying to take away your dignity.

You are welcome back on my blog anytime if you can express a similar differing, yet cordial opinion.

Great post! I’ve had more than one friend continually express her annoyance with FB and the political rhetoric. Finally, I told her to just not look at it anymore. It’s not going away. Or, she needs to respond back. I think it’s that feeling of loss of control that is hardest for people. There’s virtually no way to control what someone says on FB. You’ve got to let it go.

I enjoyed this post, Dan. Refreshing, honest, and spot on. No, we don’t have to get along, and it is ok to agree to disagree. Why on earth is that so hard for people to understand. IMO, it’s not what you say, but how you say it that creates misunderstandings.

I think the more honest, passionate and pure your writing is, the more that same type of comment might come back to – and it won’t always be nice. It took me a while but, like you, I actually found myself more calmer having accepted that fact myself.

Some people’s methods of communication don’t always jive with that of others. Accept it. It’s how it is. Or smash your fist in that other person’s face. Whatever.

I really don’t know that we’ve moved that much forward. Social media has allowed for too many voices to be heard and some of them don’t have anything nice to say. I’m ready to accept that but that doesn’t mean everyone else has to.
