A Conversation with Dr. Harry K. Moon, President of Nova Southeastern University

The Greater Fort Lauderdale Alliance Podcast

by Dan Perez

The Greater Fort Lauderdale Alliance are the primary economic development organization for Greater Fort Lauderdale/Broward County. Their membership is a who’s-who of not only high-ranking executives from the top companies and non-profits in the county but countless small business owners, city/state representatives and solopreneurs like myself. Let’s just say they’re a pretty big deal.

Every now and then, some of those people make their way into the Greater Fort Lauderdale Alliance’s Podcast – which, I’m proud to say, I helped launch back in 2021. Most of my work with the Alliance consists of videos highlighting the winners of the World Class Faculty Award (in the spring) and the winners of the Leadership Awards in the fall. Those videos usually run 90 seconds to two minutes long. And sometimes, that’s just not enough time to really get to know a person and the great work they’re doing in the community. That’s where the podcast comes in.

During my interviewing of each award winner for their video, I’ll usually select an individual(s) whose work merits more than 90 seconds. This year, that person was Dr. Harry K. Moon, who became the seventh president of Nova Southeastern University, which holds a dual distinction as both a Carnegie R1 research university and a Carnegie Opportunity University — an achievement held by fewer than two dozen institutions nationwide. That’s a pretty big deal, no?

Dr. Moon, an internationally recognized plastic and reconstructive surgeon, took office this past January 2025. Previously, he served as NSU’s executive vice president and chief operating officer, where he led the integration of the university’s clinical practices to create NSU Health, a university-affiliated, integrated health care network.

In this extended interview, hosted by “yours truly”, Dr. Moon Moon talks about his plans to advance the university beyond the great success of his predecessors, NSU’s relationship with the Alliance and what he’d like his legacy to be. And here’s a Fun Fact: the very first podcast episode I hosted (back in November of 2021) was Dr. Moon’s predecessor, Dr. George L. Hanbury, who held that very same position from 2010 to the start of 2025 (you can listen to that episode here).

Another fun fact: they both have glorious white hair. Enjoy the episode…

I want to thank the good folks at the Greater Fort Lauderdale Alliance for having given me the opportunity to host several episodes of the podcast, which is available on Spotify, iHeartRadio, Stitcher, Amazon music and on the Apple and Google podcast apps. Feel free to subscribe (all the cool kids are doing it) so that you don’t miss upcoming episodes!
