Business for the Arts of Broward is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) engaging businesses and business leaders to advocate and educate about the importance of the County’s art and cultural community as well as to recognize the connection between cultural vitality, creative success, and economic development.
For their recent “Arts Mean Business” breakfast series which is held at the Museum of Art | Fort Lauderdale and highlights the work of nationally recognized artists to the South Florida business community, the organization presented acclaimed photographer Sunny Bak.
Bak, a self-taught photographer who started her career shooting celebrities on the streets of New York, shot the gatefold image of the Beastie Boys on the “Licensed to Ill” album, and the infamous “Lesbians” cover for Newsweek in June 1993, which still ranks among their top ten selling issues.
In this candid interview, Sunny Bak discusses how she started her career, her first camera, her long-term relationship with the Beastie Boys, the details behind her “Lesbians” cover shoot for Newsweek and her connection to the popular Venice Art Crawl. This was my first video project for Business for the Arts Broward – we hope to make it a continuing series…stay tuned.
