Mandi and Patrick had not yet held their first born child when doctors informed them that their son Connor needed to be rushed to Miami Children’s Hospital with a bacterial infection that was threatening his life. Over the next few days, Connor’s condition worsened and doctors at Miami Children’s Hospital decided the only option left was to put him on ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation), a life-saving technique that mimics the natural function of the heart and lungs, allowing an infant or child to rest while natural healing of the affected organs takes place.
Four days of ECMO treatment and three weeks after arriving at Miami Children’s Hospital, Connor’s mother got to hold her son for the very first time.
Here’s the latest in a series of “Patient of the Month” videos I’ve been producing for Miami Children’s Health Foundation who raise funds and awareness for Miami Children’s Hospital – this is Connor’s remarkable story.
