When Andrew’s mother brought him to Miami Children’s Hospital for a free EKG screening, the last thing she expected was a call from the hospital a few days later informing her that Andrew had Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome, a heart condition that can lead to heart failure. Andrew had always been active in sports, played on his school’s lacrosse team and never showed any signs of a possible heart condition but unbeknownst to Andrew or his parents, he was at high risk for a sudden cardiac event.
Every three days in the U.S., a student athlete dies of sudden cardiac death (SCD). As in Andrew’s case, there are usually no advance signs or symptoms. For more information or to schedule an appointment for a pediatric EKG test, please call The Heart Program at Miami Children’s Hospital toll-free at 855-MCH-EKGS {855-624-3547}.
