For most couples, the birth of their first child is usually one of the happiest moments in their life. For Melissa and Brendan, who live in Fort Myers, Florida, that moment of joy became a nightmare when their doctors informed them that their child needed to be rushed to Miami Children’s Hospital.
Little Gaetano had a right-side congenital diaphragmatic hernia and had developed pulmonary hypertension, a rare condition that most hospitals aren’t prepared to treat. Within hours of his birth, he was rushed over to Miami Children’s Hospital by LifeFlight, a critical care transport team that provides ground and air transport of critically ill children from referring hospitals to Miami Children’s Hospital pediatric care units. Upon his arrival at MCH, doctors at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) immediately started working on saving his life.
Here’s the latest installment in a continuing series of videos I’m producing (who am I?) for Miami Children’s Health Foundation (formerly Miami Children’s Hospital Foundation), this is Gaetano’s remarkable story. Enjoy…
