I’ll be the first to admit that I’m not a big acoustic pop music fan. You’ll not find any Jewel or Tracy Chapman records in my cd collection. You will, however, find “The Sound of White” by Australian singer/songwriter Missy Higgins. I’m not sure how I ended up with it (I think I may have unofficially “borrowed” it from my younger brother Ruben about 4 years ago and failed to officially return it) but I gave it a listen and really enjoyed it. Enough about that…for now.
So, I’m currently visiting my family in New York and when I’m in The Big Apple, I usually find myself at (Le) Poisson Rouge (where my aforementioned younger brother Ruben is the GM) enjoying a live show. While at the venue, I noticed that Missy Higgins would be performing there the coming week. Missy Higgins? Hey, I know her! I have a cd of hers that I really liked! My brother then reminds me of my unofficial borrowing of what was actually his Missy Higgins cd. Whatever. I wanna see that show and I’m bringing Mrs. Perez with me.
Right, little brother? Sure.
I get there about 10 minutes before Higgins was set to go on. She takes the stage in a sparkly summer dress and casts an immediate spell on the sold-out crowd with her warm, melodic voice. Her talent is undeniable. After winning a combined 7 ARIA Awards (Australia’s equivalent to the Grammy’s) for her first two albums, “The Sound of White” and “On a Clear Night”, including ‘Breakthrough Artist of the Year’ and ‘Best Female Artist’, Higgins took a 4 year hiatus and confessed to the sold-out crowd that she had even considered quitting music for good. Fortunately for her rabid fans, Higgins is back and in fine form supporting her latest album, “The Ol’ Razzle Dazzle”.
Check her out if she comes to your town. Like myself (and Mrs. Perez), you won’t be sorry…
