So my short documentary film GRAFSTRACT: The Bronx Street Art Renaissance has been named an official selection of the Auroville Film Festival in the Human Unity category. The film will screen at Cinema Paradiso in Auroville on Wednesday, October 7th.
Auroville (meaning the “City of Dawn”) is an experimental township located near Puducherry on the Coromandel Coast in South India. It was founded in 1968 by a French woman named Mirra Alfassa (also known as “The Mother”) the spiritual collaborator and successor of Sri Aurobindo, an Indian nationalist, philosopher, yogi, guru, and poet.
Auroville aims to be a universal town where men and women of all countries are able to live in peace and progressive harmony above all creeds, all politics and all nationalities. It’s governed by a statutory foundation (the Auroville Foundation) that’s controlled fully by the Indian government, who donate more than $200,000 to Auroville every year. Moreover, UNESCO has protected the township since its birth in 1968.
Auroville was originally intended to house 50,000 but is currently home to 2500 people from 50 nationalities. The unique township has had its share of controversy over the years and has even been the subject of several documentary films but has also become a model for sustainable practices and ecologically-responsible living and has won international acclaim for its efforts in social and environmental sustainability.

GRAFSTRACT was filmed in the Bronx, New York City, back in the summer of 2014 and tells the story of J. “SinXero” Beltran, Founder & Creative Director of TAG Public Arts Project (The Art of Grafstract). With the help of some of the world’s top street artists, SinXero’s mission for TAG has become “Enhancing The Visual Landscape of Urban Communities with Art”.
The focus of the Auroville Film Festival is to connect with people and cultures within and beyond Auroville and to further the aspiration of human unity by showcasing films that develop the theme of human unity. To that end, we are very pleased to have been selected to this bi-annual festival and very excited that our film is continuing to reach an international audience.
