Very happy to announce that not one but two of my short documentary films have been named official selections of the 10th edition of Shorts Mexico to be held in Mexico City from September 3-10, 2015.
The first of the films, Angels with Shoes, documents a living kidney donation between two cousins and was shot primarily in Miami and also Puerto Rico. The film has screened at the 2015 Rincón International Film Festival in Puerto Rico where it won the ‘Best International Short’ and ‘Audience Choice” awards, and it also screened at the inaugural Film Miami Fest this past month, where it won the ‘Best Documentary’ award [Like the film on Facebook].
The other film, GRAFSTRACT: The Bronx Street Art Renaissance, was shot entirely in my hometown borough of The Bronx and made its world premiere at the 2015 Tirana International Film Festival DocuTIFF (Albania) and also screened at Muestra Audiovisual: La Imagen de la Memoria in Medellín, Colombia back in May. The film documents the mission of Bronx street artist SinXero and his TAG Public Arts Project [Like the film on Facebook].
The films take up two spots of only seven films in the International Documentary category. To have one of your films selected at such a prestigious film festival is special – to have two of your films selected is extra special. These films are very different yet they each tell a story of overcoming adversity and having your unique voice heard; making a difference. For a small-time documentary filmmaker like myself, to give these voices an audience is all I can ask for.
See you in Mexico? Perhaps…
