Video of the Week: "Day of Light (Dia de Luz)"

Continuing with our National Hispanic Heritage Month theme, today, we take a sobering and heartbreaking look at La Chureca, a municipal domestic and industrial waste-disposal site in Managua, the capital city of Nicaragua. Despite being the largest open-air landfill in Central America, it is home to more than 1500 people, living daily on rotting scraps.

In March of 2008, six filmmakers from Love Light and Melody, a non-profit organization using creativity and the healing power of the arts to capture and expose stories of injustice and extreme poverty, chronicled an epic celebration of life in La Chureca over the course of one day...from sunrise to sunset.
