In an earlier post, I shared a video recap from a trip to beautiful Galicia, Spain I took with my ladyfriend Serena back in August of last year. And if you’ve been following the photography site of my other half, Dan Perez Photography, you would have seen numerous photo galleries from that unforgettable trip.
Our road trip took us from Santiago de Compostela, then west to the charming beach town of Noia (where we visited the breathtaking Castro de Baroña), up the coast to Muxía, and a pass through Camariñas on our way to A Coruña. It was there that we decided to venture further east to dip our toes in the region of Asturias.
Playa de Peñarronda
With passes to the popular Playa de las Catedrales (Cathedral Beach) pretty much sold out, we opted for another beach that we were told wouldn’t be all that much of a letdown. What we weren’t expecting was that Playa de Peñarronda would be one of the most beautiful beaches we’d ever visited. Even on an overcast day(!)
Peñarronda beach is located between the municipalities of Castropol and Tapia de Casariego in Asturias, Spain. It is a 600-meter-long beach nestled between two cliffs (La Robaleira and Punta del Corno) and into which the Penarronda or Dola river flows, dividing it in two.
“Pedra Castelo”
In the center of this stunning beach, you’ll find the “Pedra Castelo” (Castle Rock), a circular cliff pierced by a tunnel. From this great rock the beach takes its name: “round rock”. It is the only area on the Asturian coast where the “Malcolmia Littirea” (an endangered bright pink flower) still survives. The beach was declared a natural monument in 2002.
Armed with just my Xiaomi 13 Ultra, I captured some video in an attempt to try to illustrate the natural beauty of this beach. Let me know if I succeeded, yes?
