Cudillero (Asturias): One of Spain’s Most Beautiful Coastal Towns

Back in August of last year, my ladyfriend Serena and I embarked on an unforgettable road trip through Galicia, Spain. During our trip, we wet our beaks a bit further east in the region of Asturias in northwest, Spain. We stopped at Playa de Peñarronda and then visited what many people consider northwest Spain’s most beautiful village, Cudillero.

Cudillero is a small, picturesque fishing port known for its multi-colored hanging houses set on a steep horseshoe of cliffs surrounding the harbor. The Way of Saint James, named The Northern Way (Camino de la Costa) passes through Cudillero, helping grow the popularity of this charming village in Asturias over the past few years.

With a population just over 5,000, Cudillero is a town born and developed around fishing activity. And despite it no longer being a “hidden gem” and drawing thousands of visitors (especially in summer), it has maintained its authentic charm. We didn’t find it all that crowded during our visit there in mid-August. That’s the beauty of this region (as well as Galicia) – still unpoilt by the overcrowding that comes with mass tourism. But for how long?
